Rooibos is a Dutch slang term meaning "red bush".  Pronounced Roy-boss, this tea has been used for generations by the people of the Cedar Mountains of South Africa.  Mothers soothed their babies with the tea of this natural gift, the 'Aspalathus Linearis' bush which grows solely in this area of the world.

The Rooibos Story
In 1904 Rooibos was first marketed as the 'Mountain Tea".  Generations of natives had used the needle-like leaves of the aspalathus linearis to make an aromatic tea prior to this time. The shrub-like bush is harvested in January to March.  Plants are bound into sheaves and crushed (rolled) slightly to trigger fermentation.  The fermentation process turns the green bush to red.  After fermentation it is dried naturally in the hot African sun.  Next it is sorted and graded by length, colour and flavour.  Lastly it is pasteurized and dried again to meet the standards for distribution.
Rooibos and Your Baby
In 1997 the International Inventions Exhibition in Geneva Switzerland honoured Annique Theron for her discovery of the anti-allergic properties of rooibos.  As a result of her find extensive research has been conducted on rooibos. The antispasmodic properties of rooibos are great for infants suffering from colic or cramps.  Make a cup of tea, cool and use as a supplement to regular feedings.
For nursing mothers drink rooibos as mineral supplement.
For diaper rash or other skin irritations, brew tea and soak a cloth or cotton in tea and apply directly to affected area.

Rooibos Tea and Your Health
50 % higher in antioxidants than green tea; rooibos useful in decreasing heart disease and cancer.
Antispasmodic properties relieve colic, stomach cramps, nausea, heartburn and constipation.
Low in oxalic acid, rooibos does NOT contribute to kidney stones.
Low in tannins.  Tannins are responsible for decreasing the absorption of iron and proteins.  Rooibos contains 1/10 the tannins of regular tea.
Soothing effect on the central nervous system.  Positive effects have been observed for people suffering from irritability, headaches, sleep disorders and mild depression.
Japanese research show oligosaccharides in rooibos aid the immune system in fighting viral infections.  Useful for those suffering from HIV.  These oligosaccharides are involved in the mechanism for viral binding of t-cells.
The mineral content aids in combating osteoporosis and aids in meeting the suggested daily intakes of these minerals.
Good for appetite control and for controlling blood sugar.
Contains a bioflavonoid called 'Quercetin' which aids in circulation and protects against infection.
Helpful in management of hay fever, asthma, eczema.  Reports of prevention of sinus infections.  For skin irritations apply directly to affected area.
Reduces swelling and symptomatic relief of joint and muscle inflammation.

Antioxidants
Antioxidants are free-radical scavengers. Free-radicals are a natural by-product of cell function.  The antioxidants in rooibos tea decrease the free-radical damage to healthy cells during the aging process and to the immune system.
Antioxidants minimize cholesterol build up and aid in preventing blood clots.
Scientists have discovered rooibos contains a mimic of the enzyme called 'Super Oxide Dimutase (SOD)'.  This enzyme attacks free-radicals, protecting against oxidative damage
